COACHELLA, CA – May 28, 2025 – Pacific Southwest CDC, Chelsea Investment Corporation, and officials from the City of Coachella gathered together to celebrate the grand opening of Covalda Apartments, a new addition of affordable housing in the City of Coachella. Located at 51392 Cesar Chavez Street, the 108-unit project started June 2023 with the purpose of providing more affordable family housing for residents in Coachella with less than 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
Covalda Apartments will serve as a gateway to the City's Pueblo Viejo District and is now the second housing development that PSCDC, Chelsea, and the City of Coachella have developed in this district. Consisting of two buildings, Building A will be three-story consisting of 50 units with a retail/office component lining Sixth Street. Building B will be three-story consisting of 58 units and will house the development's community room/leasing office and more retail/office space. Of the 108-units, there are (27) one-bedroom, (51) two-bedroom, and (30) three-bedroom units. Additionally, ten units are also specially equipped to provide accommodations for disabled residents.
In addition, this project seeks to improve the surrounding community by receiving an Infill Infrastructure Grant (IIG) award from the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) that will include the construction of a 9th Street Public Park in the City of Coachella, street improvements on the West Side of Tripoli and North Side of Bagdad Ave Crosswalk, onsite stormwater retention, and street improvements along 6th Street between Cesar Chavez and Palm Ave, including sidewalks, landscaping, lighting, and intersection improvements at 6th and Cesar Chavez.
PSCDC will be launching our free, on-site resident services for residents moving into Covalda Apartments! Residents will be offered adult education and skill-building classes that includes financial education, computer literacy, ESL, and art classes. A youth-focused After School Program will also be offered that will provide a minimum of 10 hours of service per week during the school year. This program focuses on tutoring, mentoring, arts & crafts and other educational enrichment activities.
